Del.icio.us is a Treat

Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking tool that works just like the bookmarks in your web browser, only better. Bookmarking with Del.icio.us has three big advantages over bookmarking in your browser–remote availability, multiple categories, and sharing.

When you use your browser to bookmark a page you are able to keep it forever, but only on THAT computer. If you are surfing on another computer–maybe at work, or at a friend’s house–your bookmarks are not available to you. Because Del.icio.us bookmarks are kept on the web, you can get to them from any computer by logging on to your account.

Unlike your browser bookmarks, Del.icio.us also allows you to bookmark a page under multiple categories. For instance, let’s say you wanted to save this article to reference later. If you use your browser to bookmark it, you will have to save it under one category. Maybe you’ll save it under “computers”, maybe under “news”, mabye under “funny”. But if you bookmark it in Del.icio.us, you can save it under all three of these categories with one click. When you go back later to find it, any of these categories under your account will show you the article.

By the way, if you’re concerned about losing the bookmarks you already have saved, no need to worry. Del.icio.us has a utility that allows you to import all of them.

The third, and maybe best, major advantage of Del.icio.us is that it allows you to easily share articles with your friends who also use Del.icio.us. By simply categorizing an article as “for:username” your friend will see that you’ve suggested this article for them the next time they log onto their Del.icio.us account.

Del.icio.us also has a free toolbar for your browser that allows you to save articles easily.
